Almost four years ago, I posted a version of this to my brand-new tiktok page…and it went mini-viral (I never thought I’d have a video take off like that! I kept opening my phone and screaming, and putting it back down…).

Is this strategy actually, technically magic? ehhhhh…no.

It’s hypnosis. The kind of radically fast self-hypnosis that helps you QUICKLY create a magic-feeling shift from “stuck” to “unstuck” using your unconscious mind. Your magic wand? Your attention and focus. Your spell ingredients? Your imagination and intention. The “spell” itself? the moment your unconscious mind puts all those pieces together and does something NEW.

  1. EMBRACE THE STUCK: let yourself really feel the dread and overwhelm of all those tasks crowding your brain – the goblin-mode procrastination dread -- bring it in close, notice your shoulders, jaw clench, eye strain, heart beat, etc.

  2. PICK UP YOUR MAGIC WAND (aka, your attention): Make a physical shift in your body... sit up a little taller, or relax your shoulders, or wiggle your toes or butt, shift your focus out to an imaginary horizon.

  3. TIME TRAVEL MAGIC: (*use your imagination, aka, the ingredients of your spell) Create a positive future memory of yourself in the moment of completing the task, feeling successful: this version of you who really moved the needle today, and feels so relieved and confident: When you have an idea of them in your mind, mentally time travel to become this version of you.

  4. CAST YOUR SPELL: From the POV of this confident self, take a look again at that mass of overwhelming stuff…and summon one (1) tiny, smallest first step that you can do right now.

  5. SWISH AND GO: Like a swish of your wand, Close your eyes and breathe in, copy the confident momentum of your future self, and breathe out, paste it into yourself in the here and now. Open your eyes, See that first smallest step and…GO.
